Side Effects of Lisinopril

The most common side effects of lisinopril are dizziness, diarrhea, headache, fatigue and cough. Amongst this list of reported side effects, dizziness is the most common but is easily managed. As long as you adhere with your doctor's prescription, you are in the safe hands. Continuous monitoring must be done to check whether the drug is showing its desired effect or not.

In occasional or very rare cases, a patient may experience less common side effects of lisinopril such as severe hypotension, orthostatic effects, asthenia or rashes but these are more associated with either overdose or underdose treatment.

Dermatological Efffects

In patients with chronic skin allergies, uncommon side effects of lisinopril may occur. Patients may have rashes, psoriasis, hives, alopecia, toxic epidermal necrolysis and sweating. Stevens-Johnson syndrome may be seen but the number of cases is in the minority. These dermatological side effects may be associated with mild fever, arthralgia or myalgia, and changes in blood dyscrasia. There has been an isolated case of Raynauld's disease reported so it is only right to go to your doctor if you fear that the skin symptoms are getting worse or is not all healing.

Lisinopril Side Effects

Severe Lisinopril Side effects are very uncommon for most patients. In fact, the only common side effect is dizziness or light-headedness on the first few days which often goes away once the patient has properly adjusted with the new drug.

There has not been yet a reported case where discontinuation of the treatment is needed due to severe side effects of the drug. Lisinopril side effects are mild and transient; not at all a requirement to stop using the drug. And if there is any case wherein lisinopril is causing huge problems to patient, doctors don't usually discontinue the drug unless it's absolutely necessary. What physicians usually do is that they only adjust the dosage of the drug in a way that will hopefully lessen the side effects or prescribe another drug that will lessen or completely eradicate the side effects as a result of lisinopril treatment.

Some patient may experience headache, dry cough, hypotension, and fatigue as other side effects of the drug but those are in the minority. Even less common that these are palpitations, cramps, muscle weakness, numbness, rash, dry mouth, impotence and diarrhea.

Lisinopril side effects are not exactly considered of clinical importance. In fact, there may be seldom cases of hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia or hypokalemia but not exactly in a quantity that needs immediate or any emergency response. Abnormal laboratory findings found during the first days of treatment with lisinopril usually goes back to normal as soon as the body adjusts to the drug or after a few days have gone by.  Patients are also constantly monitored for lisinopril side effects. Patients are advised to immediately contact their private doctor whenever the symptoms or side effects persist beyond what is normal.
